I finally saw a live birth today while doing anesthetics... Although it was not a vaginal birth (a Caesarean), it was still a sight to behold. The baby was initally not responding but after a while, he started breathing on it own... Whew! However, while I witness a live birth who's starting from a clean slate, I also witness some undesirable behaviour from nurses and an anesthetist.
It reared it's ugly head when a prisoner came in for emergency open laparotomy and had some psychiatric issues. But the moment the nurse and the anesthetist heard that he was a prisoner, their behaviour bordelined on rude and insensitive. The tone they took to the patient and the looks they give were just inappropriate. As I stood over his head ventilating him, all I saw was a young human male who is suffering because of his psychiatric condition and not a serial killer (not that he was). I hope that he will get well soon and that he will find peace in his mind.
Over the past 4 days or so, I have met marvellous anesthetists who manage to have good rapport with the patient even if the contact between them was just 5-10 minutes prior to the patient going to sleep. However, I have met one anesthetist who through his tone of voice gives me the impression that he's absolutely uninterested and find the whole routine a bore and makes the most inappropriate remarks while the patient is asleep. I hope I won't see him for the rest of my time with anesthetics cos' he just gives off such negative energy. It's amazing how when a baby is born with a clean slate and through the process of life, a person developed to become close-minded. How did we get from there to here?:clueless:
